A laptop that looks identical in two stores often carries two different model numbers. The difference is usually small, deliberate, and designed to stop you comparing prices directly.
Retailers buy configurations, not products
A manufacturer builds a chassis and then offers variations on memory, storage, screen coating and included software. Each combination gets its own code.
Large chains negotiate a configuration for themselves so that their version is technically unique to them, even where the practical difference is minor.
The result is that a like-for-like search returns no matches. The code in one shop does not exist in another, so a price comparison tool has nothing to align.
Small differences justify different prices
A cheaper store version might have slower storage, a lower resolution webcam or half the memory in a second slot. None of these is visible in a photograph.
Because the specification genuinely differs, the retailer is not misleading anyone by charging less. The item really is not the same machine.
Price matching policies then have nothing to bite on. A guarantee to match an identical product elsewhere is safe when identical products do not exist.
Refresh cycles are tied to the retail calendar
New model codes tend to appear before the major selling periods rather than when the internal components change. Timing follows the promotional calendar.
That allows a chain to advertise a new arrival at full price while the outgoing code is cleared at a discount, with both machines on the shelf at once.
The outgoing model is often the better purchase, since the changes between codes in one cycle are frequently limited to trim and bundled software.
Component substitution happens within a code
Manufacturers sometimes source the same part from several suppliers, so two units with one model number can contain different screen panels or storage drives.
Reviews of the machine may therefore describe behaviour, particularly screen quality and battery life, that your unit does not share.
This is not a secret so much as an unadvertised reality of large-scale manufacturing, and it makes single reviews a weaker guide than the pattern across many.
How to compare when the codes do not match
The workable approach is to ignore the model number and compare the underlying specification: processor generation, memory quantity and speed, storage type, panel resolution and brightness.
Manufacturer support pages list the full specification for each code, which is usually more complete than the retailer's summary.
Once the specifications line up, the price difference becomes meaningful again, and the exclusive configuration loses the protection it was designed to have.
